SZE, Kam Yim

Professor K.Y. Sze received his BSc(Eng) from the University of Hong Kong in Mechanical Engineering with First Class Honours and as the Williamson Prizeman of the year. He continued his studies in the same Department and earned his PhD three years later. Before returning to his alma mater in 1996, he had taken up faculty positions at Nanyang Technological University of Singapore and City University of Hong Kong.

He has published over 180 refereed journal articles on advanced finite element formulations, smart material and structure modelling, biomechanics, vibrations, fracture mechanics, soft robotics, fabric drape and origami simulations, etc. He was ranked by Clarivate Analytics in the top 1% worldwide by citations in his field from 2009 to 2015. He has been an editorial board member of Finite Elements in Analysis & Design, International Journal of Mechanics & Materials in Design, HKIE Transactions and a few other international journals.

Professor Sze is a Registered Professional Engineer (HK), a Chartered Engineer (UK), a fellow of HKIE and a fellow of IMechE. He has written about 40 consultancy or expert witness reports directly or indirectly for government departments, statutory bodies, public utility companies, construction companies, law firms, etc., on mechanical and material failures, industrial safety, stress analyses, vibration analyses, fracture and fatigue analyses, mechanical engineering design, etc.

In community service, he was a member of the Mechanical Discipline Advisory Panel of HKIE, Disciplinary Board of Lifts and Escalators (Safety) Ordinance, Appeal Board Panel of the Builders’ Lifts and Tower Working Platforms (Safety) Ordinance, Appeal Tribunal Panel (Buildings), Assessment Panel of Incubation Programmes for the HK Science & Technology Park, among others.

After retiring from his full professorship in 2025, he continues to serve the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering as the Director of Inter-disciplinary Facilities and an advisor to the Head of Department, respectively. He is also an Honorary Professor of both the Faculty and the Department.
